The Girls Teach Us About The Value Of Human Life!
I LOVE OUR LITTLE GIRLS!!
So we drove to Halifax the other day to drop Bill off at work. As we drove into the parking lot of his work, there was a woman standing by the corner asking drivers for spare change. She has been there almost every day for the past week or two. The girls were talking to each other in the back seat about how sad they were that the lady didn't have a home. They are so kind and mindful of others feelings all the time! We were telling them that just because she needed money, didn't mean she was homeless. We talked about all the different types of people who ask for money. How some are homeless and working, homeless and not working by choice, homeless and not working because they are unable, not homeless but low income, and not homeless or low income(career homeless....sadly, we've met a few). We talked about how we should always help people if we are able to, but to also remember that we aren't always able to help everyone who asks.
The girls totally understood that. They asked if we had any change this time to help that lady. I found $2.00 in my purse and the girls got so excited! Bill suggested that I let Ayla give it to her because she would be on that side of the car. As we pulled up next to the lady she just smiled and waved and didn't expect us to pay any attention to her. Sadly, she looked like she got ignored a lot. I rolled Ayla's window down and Ayla waved at her and handed her the money. She giggled when the lady said "God blesses you". Then she said, "Do you know what your mommy just did? She just taught you how to show Love!" The light changed to green and we had to start driving.
The girls were glowing! They talked about it the whole way back to Dartmouth and that it was so funny that the lady was that happy just to get $2.00! Then they started talking about what she might use it for. I gave some suggestions about what I thought she might need and one of them said, "She can't get all that with $2.00? We should go and buy her those things so she can spend her money on food" I said that this was a great idea. We thought of an amount that would be good to spend and then we went to Dollarama to see what we could afford. Since most things at Dollarama don't really come in single packs we decided to divide what we bought between 6 people(that's how the items split up best, due to pack sizes).
We ended up buying some first aid supplies, bottled water(and flavour packets), some toiletries, hand warmers for night time, and some snacks that didn't need to be prepped. It ended up being quite a bit for each person. Also, we bought a bunch of candies and mints for them to suck on when they are hungry or thirsty and we gave a couple of them $5.00 Tim cards. We couldn't afford to do all of them though. Maybe we will before they are all handed out.
After we did our little shopping spree, we went home to sort it. The girls had so much fun doing this. Even the sorting had a thought process....Haha! Madison needed to sort the candies in a particular way, so that no one would be stuck with a flavour that they don't like. She is honestly such a sweetheart <3
Then we realized we didn't have anything to put it in. We didn't want the people to have to carry around a grocery bag everywhere they went. So Bill talked to his TELUS rep and she let us have a bunch of TELUS shoulder bags. They are awesome and exactly what we needed. They didn't weigh anything and they didn't need to be carried by hand.
So now we are ready to go, but how are we going to hand them out? The girls knew that they definitely wanted to give one to the lady they already talked to. We thought we might just keep them all in the trunk of the car and we could hand them out as needed, but after just one day we realized that the trunk would be way to hot for them to stay in there. Our thoughts are that we could take one with us whenever we go out somewhere. Or we could bring them all on a trip to Downtown Halifax and see if we can give out all 5 at once. It's not always easy to find someone who needs it. We know they are out there, we just don't always know where. Wish us luck!
We plan on doing this again really soon! If you would like to help us fill the bags, please feel free to send along any donated goods, homemade items, giftcards, etc. Any donation will be greatly appreciated by the receiver of the bags! We will make sure they are distributed fairly. :) If you would like to contact me about this, please email me at bringinguproses5@gmail.com
Also, please feel free to share this so we can get the word out and receive more help. I want to keep encouraging our girls to be thoughtful and "choose the right" in every opportunity that I can! CTR
